Born in Manchester, Ryan progressed through Manchester United's academy, making two first-team appearances for the Red Devils. He was also part of the club's 2011 FA Youth Cup-winning side alongside players such as Jesse Lingard, Paul Pogba and Ravel Morrison.

During his time at Old Trafford, Ryan enjoyed notable loan spells with Championship clubs Peterborough United and Ipswich Town, as well as a short spell at Barnsley, before completing a permanent move to Fulham in 2014.

Ryan spent the next three seasons at Craven Cottage, making more than 60 appearances and scoring twice, with the majority of those outings coming in the Championship. During his time with Fulham, he also enjoyed a loan spell at Blackburn Rovers and two separate loan spells with Wigan Athletic.

Ryan continued to establish himself as a Championship regular following his departure from Fulham in 2017, making more than 50 appearances for Millwall before adding another 60 for Luton Town. Across his career, he has made more than 250 Championship appearances.

In 2021, Ryan joined League One side Portsmouth, where he spent two seasons and made 60 appearances before moving to Australia to join Adelaide United in the A-League in 2023.

In July 2026, Ryan signed for the Linnets. After a successful trial period.
