Matchday eight sees King’s Lynn Town face Hednesford Town at the Docherty Walks for the first Tuesday night home game of the season.
Last time out for the Pitmen was a defeat to South Shields on home soil. Adam Campbell scored for the visitors inside the first sixty seconds, in a goal that was labelled by the Hednesford manager as a “poor, poor goal to concede.” The Pitmen soon grew into the game but were unable to get on the scoresheet. Another point to highlight is that Dale Gorman was sent off just over twenty minutes into the second half, which didn’t help the Pitmen’s chances of getting anything from the game.
Hednesford sit just above the bottom four by a point, but we all know that statistic means nothing at this point in the campaign. One win, three draws and three losses round off the opening seven fixtures for Kelvin Davis’ men.
King’s Lynn Town and Hednesford have faced each other twelve times in league matches since the 1988/89 season, with Lynn winning five, the Pitmen winning four and three draws occurring.
Hednesford fans will recognise our shot-stopper Ronnie Hollingshead, who produced one of the saves of the season on Saturday against Darlington, which helped Lynn clinch their third victory of the campaign. Hollingshead spent a short time on loan at the Pitmen during the 2022/23 season, making four appearances during his spell at Hednesford on loan from West Bromwich Albion.
This is Hednesford Town’s first season back in the National League North since the 2015/16 season. Last season, they gained promotion via the play-offs after missing out on automatic promotion on the final day to Hebburn Town.
They took on Warrington Rylands in the play-off final, in a game where the visitors were just minutes away from promotion to Step 2. George Williams struck the ball home in the final minute of normal time to level the game and take it to extra time. Another half an hour of football was played, but neither side could take the lead. It went down to penalties, in which the hosts were victorious, winning 5-4 on penalties to clinch promotion in the most dramatic fashion.
